The West Wales derby at Parc y Scarlets, the first derby of the season, opens up to a bright autumnal afternoon.
Ospreys get the upper hand in the opening quarter spending the best part of ten minutes in our 22 but unable to turn pressure in to points. Sam Davies puts in an initial drop goal attempt, which is charged down, before Blade Thomson rips a turnover ball in the shadow of our tryline to get us out of danger. Huge defensive effort from the Scarlets keeping the Ospreys at bay.
A Rhys Patchell kick gets us down in to Ospreys territory and with a blink of an eye former Osprey Kieron Fonotia makes a break through their defensive line. He’s away, great pace and determination. He’s got Johnny McNicholl in support and he makes a dash into opposition 22 crossing the whitewash unopposed. Halfpenny adds the conversion.
Ospreys make their way back in to Scarlets territory. They get a run towards our try line thrugh winger Luke Morgan. He edges just inches away from the whitewash. He’s pinged for holding on. Scarlets clear to touchline.
We reach the half an hour mark and whilst Rhys Patchell is seen to by medical staff the Ospreys run in a try thrugh centre Cory Allen after a dash back into our 22. Sam Davies adds the conversion bringing the score level pegging at 7-7.
32 minutes on the clock and former Scarlet George North makes a break along the touchline in front of the North Stand. He races towards the whitewash, crosses the line but is tackled by Scarlets winger Tom Prydie.
It’s a try in North’s eyes but we head to TMO. It’s a phenomenal effort from Prydie to rip the ball from North’s grasp but try is awarded.
Scarlets look to finish the first half strongly and head up in to Ospreys territory. The ball is played through the hands, advantage is played in our favour and Halfpenny steps up for a penalty.
Half time: Scarlets 10 Ospreys 12
Patchell makes a return from the medical room for the second half with Angus O’Brien heading back to the replacements bench.
Scarlets look sharp in the opening ten minutes of the second half. We make headway in to Ospreys territory putting pressure on the visitors with a kick to the corner. We build through the phase and centre Hadleigh Parkes crosses the whitewash under the sticks. We had back to TMO and the try is disallowed for a move earlier in the phase. Paul Asquith comes on for Tom Prydie. The homeside’s pressure is rewarded with a penalty for Halfpenny pushing the Scarlets back in front.
Scarlets are back in their 22. We’re looking dangerous with ball in hand. The ball is shipped out wide. It’s knocked on by the Ospreys. The crowd are incensed. They call for a deliberate knock on. We head to TMO. It’s deemed a knock on. Scrum penalty Scarlets.
Momentum is with us. From a move inside Ospreys’ half we edge ever closer to the whitewash. Patchell puts peddle to the mettle and crosses for a try! Halfpenny converts.
Just minutes later winger Luke Morgan hits back with a try for the Ospreys. The pass look marginally forward but he shows great pace to cross the line bringing the Ospreys back within three points. Davies’ kick goes astray.
With just over ten minutes remaining on the clock we kick for the corner. Ospreys are penalised for kicking the ball out of the ruck. We kick for the corner again. The ball heads from one side of the park to the other. Big hit after big hit. We decide to go for the corner once more but Ospreys steal the ball on this occasion. Territory lost.
Scarlets spend the closing minutes of the game in Ospreys territory. Despite continuous pressure Scarlets aren’t able to capitalise but do enough to hold on to the victory.
