Werner Kruger says it is an honour to captain the Scarlets for the first time as he prepares to lead out the side in Jersey on Saturday.
The experienced South African prop will skipper the first-half XV against the English Championship club in the Scarlets’ opening warm-up match of the 2019-20 campaign.
Centre Steff Hughes will then take over the armband for the second period.
“I have captained sides a few times, but not much at professional level - it is an honour to lead the Scarlets into battle,” said the 34-year-old tight-head.
“It is exciting to get out there and play. Pre-season builds and builds and boys get a little bit on the edge until it eventually comes to game-time so we are all looking forward to the first hit and putting in place what we have worked hard on so far.
“With the World Cup and 14 internationals away it is the chance for the younger guys to step up and I am excited to see how they go on the weekend and possibly during the season.
“It is going to be a tough game, a good hit-out for us. Jersey are really going to test us, but that is what we want as we prepare for the start of the PRO14 season against Connacht.”
Commenting on the appointment of Kruger and Hughes in the leadership roles this weekend, head coach Brad Mooar said: “Werner has been outstanding during pre-season, he is an absolute senior pro; there is a lot of wisdom there and calmness under pressure. He also has a huge amount of respect from the players.
“Likewise, there is also a massive amount of respect for Steff. Both of them have been leading really well during this pre-season period and it is great for us to have captains of that quality to lead us on this Jersey trip.”
