Scarlets Rugby seeks to appoint a new Scarlets Transition and Academy Head Coach due to the progression of the previous post holder into the senior coaching group.

Scarlets and formerly Llanelli RFC have a world renowned reputation for developing and nurturing the rugby stars of the future with dozens of Welsh Internationals and British and Irish Lions having progressed through the Scarlets Development Pathway.

The role is accountable to the Director & General Manager of Rugby for ensuring rugby talent graduates fully into the Scarlets senior squad by providing a world-leading player development programme.

To be successful in the role you will need to work effectively and constructively with the Scarlets Pathway Manager and Scarlets Head Coach and show equal commitment to players transitioning into the first team environment and those still fully immersed within the Academy programme.

The role also requires an understanding of the Scarlets’ place in the local community and the role the Scarlets Academy plays in representing the hopes and aspirations of young people. Due to the nature of the role, anti-social hours are inevitable.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Devise and lead the delivery of a world-class rugby development curriculum from pre-Academy through to transition to the first team. This includes full accountability for the rugby content contained within players’ individual development plans and the quality of delivery of Academy skills coaches and regional age grade coaches
  • Ensure the Scarlets senior rugby philosophy, structures and skills curriculum are delivered throughout the development pathway.
  • Support the continuous development of Academy, age-grade and development centre coaches.
  • As a key member of the talent identification group contribute fully to the development and delivery of a world leading talent identification programme.
  • Work with the pathway manager to ensure activity and player progression against the rugby development curriculum is continuously tracked and monitored. This will be reported to the GM of Rugby and the Scarlets Board on a monthly basis.
  • Work closely with the Scarlets Head Coach and senior coaching team to ensure every transition player receives the support they need to reach their potential and the standard required to be awarded a senior professional playing contract.
  • Deliver rugby “extras” to transition and senior players.
  • Ensure transition players receive a comprehensive support package while transitioning from Academy into first team.
  • Ensure the physical, emotional and mental wellbeing of transition players.
  • Fulfil the role of coach or head coach to the Scarlets A Team (dependent on experience and the requirements of personal development plans).
  • Develop and maintain a healthy, positive and beneficial relationship with the WRU which facilitates the successful delivery of Scarlets objectives.
  • Under the direction of the Head Coach, deliver skills, unit and technical development coaching to transition and first team players when required.
  • Improve Scarlets brand awareness, recognition and support throughout the Scarlets region and beyond.
  • Provide objective and qualified subjective information on players to the GM of Rugby in order to maintain the Scarlets rugby succession plan.
  • Develop strategic partnerships to improve player quality and numbers entering the development pathway.
  • Establish and maintain a positive community profile.
  • Provide monthly reports to the Scarlets Board via the Director and GM of Rugby

  • Ability to work irregular and antisocial hours as required including work outside normal hours, at evenings, weekends and public holidays
