Former Scarlet George North, one of Wales’ greatest ever wingers, has announced he is to retire from rugby at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old is currently playing his rugby with Provence in the French second tier, but started out his remarkable professional career at Parc y Scarlets.

George burst onto the scene in 2010 at the age of 18, scoring two tries on his competitive debut against Benetton and didn’t look back after that.

His first appearance for Wales produced a similar impact with two tries against the Springboks at the Principality Stadium. He went on to win 121 caps and score 47 tries for his country.

He had three seasons with the Scarlets senior squad, playing 45 matches and scoring 14 tries and represented the club on the British & Irish Lions tour of 2013, providing one of the great iconic Lions moments when he lifted Israel Folau off his feet before carrying him on his shoulder in the second Test against the Wallabies.

Announcing his decision on social media, George said:  “I want to let you know that at the end of the season, I will be retiring. For me, it’s the right time.

“I have been able to live out my childhood dream for many seasons, playing with some of the best players, coaches and staff behind the scenes.

“I can’t thank my family, my friends and you guys enough for the support you have shown me over the years. Honestly, it’s meant the world to me.”
