Llandovery launched the defence of their Super Rygbi Cup title with a hard-earned 29-12 victory over Swansea, with Academy players Tom Phillips, Tiaan Sparrow and Kai Jones playing their part in the win at Church Bank.

However, Carmarthen Quins went down to a 40-12 loss to Newport after leading 12-0 at half-time thanks to tries from Scarlets senior prop Sam O’Connor and Academy wing Thomas Williams. Wing Iori Badham, centre Gabe McDonald and lock Sam Williams were also part of the Quins squad.

Elsewhere, full-back Sion Jones and hooker Keanu Evans were in the Ammanford side beaten by Bedwas in their WRU Championship Cup semi-final at The Gnoll, while loose-head prop Josh Morse made his mark off the bench in the Scarlets’ dramatic late URC win over Ulster.

Eight Scarlets players have been named in Richard Whiffin’s Wales U20s squad ahead of their Six Nations opener against England in Northampton – Jac Pritchard, Hudson Nevin, Yestyn Cook, Dom Kossuth, Joe Denman, Osian Williams, Steff Jac Jones and Carwyn Leggatt-Jones, who is set to be involved in Scarlets’ round 11 URC clash with Benetton in Treviso on Friday night.
