Benetton reaction: Fletcher Anderson and Gareth Davies

Player of the match Fletcher Anderson and try-scorer Gareth Davies reflected on the events of a crazy 20-20 drawn match in Treviso, a game played in equally bizarre conditions.

After half-time, a heavy fog engulfed the Stadio Monigo, with referee Andrew Brace coming close to abandoning the contest.

However, after discussions with captains and URC officials, the match continued, with both sides having late chances to snatch the win.

“I haven’t played in anything like that, when we rocked up it was a little bit foggy, but when we came out for the second half, we couldn’t see the crowd – it was interesting, for sure, tough under the high ball!” said Anderson, who delivered another outstanding performance in the No. 8 jersey.

“We got a bit of a ‘rev up’ at half-time. Our breakdown was poor, we spoke about that and we also didn’t execute at times, I felt our breakdown did let us down and we did give them a couple of chances to win the game late on as well, so luckily they didn’t take those.

“But it was a positive start to the second half because we have come out and started the second half poorly in recent games.”

The former Crusader added: “The Champions Cup was a good period for us, playing some quality sides. Having a challenge like that forces you to lift your game and I think we have done that. We are not far off, we seem to be letting ourselves down at key moments, but we are trending upwards for sure.”

Those words were echoed by scrum-half Gareth Davies, who added another try to his URC tally, taking him to joint third on the all-time list.

“We spoke at half-time, the breakdown had been disappointing in the first half and they had a lot of ‘ins’ through that area. The second half was a lot better and we grew into the game,” said Davies.

“The forwards were great tonight, the scrum and line-out went well, the effort was there. It was a shame we weren’t able to get over the line with the win.”
