Scarlets Community Foundation officer Rhys Davies has recently returned from a “life-changing” coaching experience in Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia where he assisted the men’s international sevens team as part of a link-up with the Welsh Rugby Union.
Rhys spent time with the squad at Osh State University ahead of a tournament in Oman where Kyrgyzstan claimed an historic first ever win.
As part of the week-long trip, Rhys also delivered training sessions for men and women to help increase rugby participation in the country and was invited to a meeting with the British Ambassador in Kyrgyzstan.
Rhys said: “I want to say a huge thank you to the Welsh Rugby Union and the Scarlets for the incredible opportunity to be part of such a proud rugby family. It’s been an honour to learn, grow and represent Welsh rugby alongside so many passionate people.
“My time coaching in Kyrgyzstan has also been a life-changing experience. The people were unbelievably welcoming, the culture was rich and generous, and the players’ enthusiasm reminded me why I love this sport. I’ve gained so much, not just as a coach, but as a person.”
