Full-back Jac Davies claimed a try double and flanker Tiaan Sparrow swooped for the match-winning score as Llandovery celebrated a late win over RGC in the latest round of Super Rygbi Cymru fixtures.
The Drovers had been behind throughout with Davies’s brace keeping them in the hunt until Sparrow crossed and fly-half Ioan Hughes held his nerve to nail the crucial conversion kick to secure the 36-35 victory.
Loose-head prop Tom Phillips, second rowers Dylan Alford and Dan Gemine and centre Gryff Watkins also started the match at Church Bank. Prop Jac Pritchard, fly-half Steffan Jac Jones and lock Kai Jones were among the replacements.
With Ebbw Vale’s match against Cardiff postponed because of the impact of Storm Amy, the Drovers now sit in top spot ahead of their clash with the Steelmen at Eugene Cross Park in front of the S4C cameras on Thursday night.
While Llandovery played their late card, there was disappointment at the death for Carmarthen Quins, who had led Pontypool 21-3 before going down to a 24-21 defeat.
Backs Ioan Jones, Gabe McDonald, Thomas Williams and Elis Price all started for the Quins, with half-backs Carwyn Leggatt-Jones and Rhodri Lewis coming off the bench. Gabe crossed for one of the Quins’ three tries and kicked two conversions. There was also a comeback for senior prop Archer Holz.
In the WRU Premiership, flying wing Callum Woolley crossed for a hat-trick of tries for Llangennech in their agonising late 33-30 loss at home to Neath.
Second row Sam Williams was on the score sheet for Llanelli Wanderers, who claimed their first league win of the campaign, 22-14, at Narberth.
In the WRU Championship hooker Keanu Evans started for Ammanford in their 30-25 triumph over Kenfig Hill.
