Josh calls for belief ahead of Saints showdown

Josh Macleod insists belief will be key for his Scarlets side as they head to Northampton on Sunday looking to secure knockout rugby.

Heading into the final round of the Investec Champions Cup pool stages, Scarlets still have an outside chance of qualification for a last-16 tie, but will need to rip up the formbook against one of Europe’s leading sides this season.

“You have to have belief, if you don’t have belief you don’t get very far,” said the skipper.

“After the Bulls play (Section Paloise) on Friday night we will know what needs to be done, but we are going into this game with one goal in mind and that is to win.

“This club has a rich history of winning, we haven’t been on the right side of results this season, but behind the scenes we are working hard to change that. If everyone is on point and everyone performs, we have more than a fighting chance. We have to have that level of belief that in the final 20 minutes we can turn those tight games into victories. If you believe you can do it and tell yourself you can do it, then anything is possible.”

Around 400-500 Scarlets fans are expected to be at Franklin’s Gardens for the match.

Josh added: “These types of games are why you play rugby, Champions Cup, a packed house; we have got hundreds of fans travelling up there, five busloads of supporters going up from here and we want to be able to give something back to them because they are just as important to the club as anyone. To get a scalp on Sunday would mean a lot, we have got to stick to our game, stick to what we are good at and hopefully it will be enough.”
