Scarlets make two changes to starting line-up for Sharks showdown

Wales international centre Joe Roberts will make his 50th appearance when the Scarlets take on the Hollywoodbets Sharks in Durban on Saturday (18:30 UK time).

Roberts will take his place in a side showing just two changes from last weekend’s bonus-point win over the Lions in Johannesburg.

With Gareth Davies having flown home because of a rib injury, Archie Hughes is handed the No. 9 jersey.

The rest of the back division is unchanged. Blair Murray, Tom Rogers and Ellis Mee are again named in the back three; Roberts and Johnny Williams continue in midfield and Sam Costelow starts at fly-half.

The only change up front comes at hooker with Ryan Elias again rotating with Marnus van der Merwe, who was this week named in the forthcoming Springboks’ alignment camp.

Elias joins Alec Hepburn and Henry Thomas in the front row; Alex Craig and Sam Lousi combine in the second row and Vaea Fitita, Taine Plumtree and skipper Josh Macleod make up the back row.

Efan Jones comes onto the bench to provide scrum-half cover.

Going into the final round of the regular season, Scarlets sit in sixth spot in the BKT URC table and will be waiting on results on Friday evening to see where they lie before kick-off.

Head coach Dwayne Peel said: “There are a lot of things that can happen before our game, but the key for us is that our destiny is in our own hands. The Sharks have been going well, they are a team stacked full of Springboks so to get what we need is going to take a big effort.

“The challenge of us is matching their physicality. That will be key. But as much as knowing the quality in their side, this is about ourselves, we are comfortable with how we want to play and it is about being able to replicate last week’s performance this week. We are prepping as normal, we want to try and get a result, we want to keep the momentum we have built having won our last four games.”
