Skipper Josh Macleod praised his side’s fighting spirit in the wake of Saturday’s 50-21 Investec Champions Cup defeat to defending champions Union Bordeaux Begles.

The final scoreline painted a different picture of a game in which the Scarlets battled throughout against a UBB side stacked with star quality.

“We gave it our all and were fighting to the end,” said Macleod.

“It feels like we have built something over the last three or four games that shows an element of resilience and competitiveness that is going to hold us in good stead moving forward.

“It was a big occasion, 30-odd thousand here, a special place for a lot of the boys to play.

“Our fans were great out there and we were able to score in front of them early which gave them something to cheer about.”

Asked whether there was frustration that his side didn’t come away with a four-try bonus point, Macleod added: “To a certain extent. That was one of our goals. As I said, we fought for it to the end and when the game gets a bit more open and expansive, mistakes can happen and a side of Bordeaux’s quality will punish those mistakes.”

The Champions Cup is put on hold until the final two pool rounds in January, with the Scarlets’ focus now turning to three Welsh derbies, starting against Cardiff at the Arms Park on Friday night.

Macleod added “I spoke about resilience and competitiveness and if ever you needed that it is in derbies so we are going to reset, get our recovery in and look to fly into it on Friday.”
