At the Eisteddfod field, the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol launched a new collection of e-learning sports resources for NVQ Level 2 learners, including contributions from Scarlets coach Emyr Phillips.
The resource was developed following research by the Coleg Cymraeg back in 2022 looking at the resource needed within sports. It identified that Sports NVQ Level 2 needed a bilingual resource to teach the course. Sport has also been identified as one of the priority areas in the Coleg Cymraeg’s Further Education Strategy.
The Welsh Language Commissioner, in their recent research into the “Use of Welsh among children and young people”, also noted that sport has “great potential as a vehicle to increase the use of Welsh among children and young people.” The same research showed that children and young people are more likely to use Welsh with coaches and friends during sports activities.
The resource, called Cit Chwaraeon (Sports Kit), includes practical information on how to plan and run a session, the various roles and responsibilities in sport, useful advice, and a glimpse into the daily lives of a range of professionals in the field.
One of the coaches who contributed to the resource is Emyr Phillips, Scarlets Pathway Manager and Scrum Coach. In the video clip, Emyr discusses elements such as the skills needed to be a good coach, how to communicate with athletes, and how to manage time.
Emyr said, “I’m very proud to have contributed to this resource, helping to develop the sports leaders of the future. It’s also great that the resource is available in both Welsh and English and that young people studying courses in further education colleges have a new resource to support their learning.
“I’ve used a lot of Welsh on the playing field, as a player and a coach, and it’s important that we show young people how useful it is to speak both languages if they’re considering working in the sports industry.”
The resource is available on the Coleg Cymraeg Resource Portal and at cit-chwaraeon.cymru. It was developed with financial support from the Welsh Government.
