Brython Thunder and Gwalia Lightning played out an entertaining Celtic Challenge clash in
front of a crowd of 600 at Parc y Scarlers, with the visitors completing the Welsh double with
a hard-earned 10-0 victory.
For most of the match, there was little to separate two sides who played with plenty of
endeavour and created a number of opportunities, but it was a second-half try by local
product Maisie Davies, in the colours of the Lightning, that secured the win.
It proved a much-closer affair than the previous week, won 42-22 by Lightning, giving head
coach Ashley Beck and his team lots to build on for the remainder of the expanded home
and away competition.
Despite most of the opening half hour being spent in Thunder territory, all Lightning had to
show for their efforts was a penalty - in off the upright - by fly-half Carys Hughes from
straight in front.
A thumping hit from impressive scrum-half Seren Singleton halted an attack by the visitors
then a sharp counter by lively wing Eleanor Hing put Thunder on the offensive.
On the opposite flank, a clever chip and chase by right wing Ellie Tromans almost led to
Hing scoring, then skipper Natalia John was held up over the line.
Hooker Evie Gill was next to be denied as Thunder pressed for the opening try, but
Lightning's defence held firm to ensure the scoreboard remained try-less at half-time.
The see-sawing nature of the contest continued after the break with Lightning next to push
for the try, only for Thunder to dig deep before sending Tromans on a searing break from
deep.
With replacements Ffion Lewis, Hanna Marshall and Hannah Bluck adding energy to the
Thunder attack, the home side looked threatening, but it was Lightning who finally struck the
first blow, courtesy of West Walian Maisie Davies who hit a great short line to dive over.
Hughes converted to make it 10-0.
The Thunder threw everything into the final minutes, but it was Lightning who secured the
back-to-back victory.
