Leinster maintained their unbeaten start to the BKT United Rugby Championship season with a convincing 35-5 victory at Parc y Scarlets.

The men from Dublin were clinical whenever they got in the red zone, while the home side failed to capitalise on a number of opportunities they created with inaccuracy letting them down at crucial times.

Poor discipline also didn’t help the cause with the Scarlets handed three more yellow cards, all in a disappointing second half.

For the second week running, Scarlets conceded a try inside the opening minute.

The home side failed to deal with the kick-off and from the ensuing line-out, Leinster struck with full-back Chris Cosgrove racing over for a try converted by fly-half Ross Byrne.

The Scarlets needed some resolute defending to keep the Irish province at bay again before they carved open a brilliant try of their own on 20 minutes.

The ball was spun wide to Ryan Conbeer, then back again, before skipper Jonathan Davies delivered a brilliant miss pass to give Steff Evans a free run to the line for his second try in as many games.

Scarlets were giving as good as they got against the unbeaten URC leaders, but it was Leinster who were next on the scoreboard when wing Rob Russell touched down after a kick through had caused problems for the home defence.

Byrne converted from the touchline and although the Scarlets created a couple of opportunities before half-time with wing Tom Rogers a real menace, the score remained 14-5 at the interval.

Needing a strong start to the second period, a couple of soft penalties cost the home side again and Leinster are the masters of punishing indiscretions.

Prop Thomas Clarkson burrowed over from close range for try number three, again converted by Byrne, then the Scarlets almost went the length of the field for a brilliant score, but after a break from Johnny McNicholl, Steff Evans was just beaten in the race to Ryan Conbeer’s kick through.

The game was over as a contest on 58 minutes when Dan Jones and McNicholl were sin-binned in quick succession and referee Andrea Piardi awarded a penalty try for a deliberate knock-on by the full-back.

To their credit, Scarlets defended manfully when down to 13, but Leinster had the final word with a fifth try and a second penalty try eight minutes from time with Gareth Davies shown yellow for illegally pulling down the maul.

Scarlets return to action when they head to South Africa for a round eight clash against defending champions the DHL Stormers at the end of next month.
