As the countdown continues towards the visit of the Barbarians to Parc y Scarlets on Saturday, there will be a big Aussie influence to the visitors’ coaching team.

Jason Gilmore, Berrick Barnes, Nathan Grey and Laurie Fisher are at the helm of the famous invitational side, who have swept all before them on their northern hemisphere tour so far, swamping Northampton Saints and Bristol in a tide of free-running tries.

Australia A head coach Gilmore is the current New South Wales Assistant coach and has previously been at Queensland Reds and with Australia U20s.

A classy operator across the backline, Barnes played 51 times for the Wallabies and Super Rugby for the Reds and Waratahs before ending his career in Japan. He also played rugby league as a youngster, representing Brisbane Broncos in the NRL. He is currently part of the coaching team at another top NRL side, Newcastle Knights. Barnes was unveiled by Eddie Jones this summer as a part-time kicking consultant to the national side.

Former Wallaby centre Nathan Grey was capped 35 times in the green and gold. He has been part of the coaching teams at the Rebels and Waratahs in Super Rugby and was defence coach of the Wallabies until 2019, leaving the role to become Rugby Australia’s national high-performance coach, working with the national Sevens programmes, the Wallaroos women’s side and age-grade teams.

Fisher is well known to northern hemisphere audiences having been head coach at English Premiership side Gloucester and on the coaching ticket at Irish big-hitters Munster. He is now assistant coach of the Brumbies, a team he helped guide to the Super Rugby title back in 2004.
