Dwayne reflects on Clermont defeat

Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel was left to reflect on what might have been following his side’s 38-17 defeat to Clermont Auvergne in round three of the European Challenge Cup.

The scores were tied 0-0 when centre Johnny Williams was shown red for a dangerous high challenge after 26 minutes, but the home side took control straight after that.

Peel said: “The red card obviously hurt us, but I’m more disappointed with the 15 minutes after that. The card seemed to shock us, we went into our shells and gave away two soft tries. After that it was going to be a struggle.

“It had been closely contested until then and in the second half we were the stronger team and played some really good stuff. But I guess we’ll never know what could have been had it been 15 against 15.

“That is something for us to build on for next week and it’s important we show what we can do against Edinburgh.”

Scarlets will this week assess a leg injury to skipper Josh Macleod ahead of the final round of the pool stages against Edinburgh at Parc y Scarlets on Friday night. (8pm).
