As part of their two-week tour of South Africa, Scarlets players and coaches spent an inspiring afternoon coaching youngsters at local rugby club Jaguars RFC in the community of Sydenham near Durban.

The ‘Sharks Pups’ coaching clinic for around 90 boys and girls aged between six and 13 saw Scarlets players Gareth Davies, Alec Hepburn, Ioan Nicholas and Tristan Davies, along with coaches Dwayne Peel and Albert van den Berg – a former Sharks player – come together with the Sharks community team and URC for a special event as part of the URC ‘Communities United’ campaign.

The ‘Communities United’ campaign encourages URC clubs to engage in cross-hemisphere activity, engaging young fans and educating local clubs and players on travelling teams.

Launched in November 2022, ‘Sharks Pups’ is a free community rugby development programme which teaches children basic rugby skills and inspires them to dream big and aspire towards a brighter future.

Scarlets Managing Director Jon Daniels said: “It was an inspiring afternoon and a privilege for us to attend the clinic. It was wonderful to see so many smiles on faces and we thoroughly enjoyed being part of it.

“It is fantastic that when we come on tour that we are able to take part in these cultural exchanges and a big thanks to the Sharks and Jaguars RFC for the warm welcome and to URC for providing the opportunity.”

A big thanks also to the URC’s official ball supplier Gilbert for providing balls for the clinic.

Scarlets and Hollywoodbets Sharks meet in round five of the BKT United Rugby Championship in Durban on Saturday.
