Sporting Memories group to launch at Parc y Scarlets

Rob Lloyd News

Are you an older sports fan? Then why not join the FREE Sporting Memories club launching at Parc y Scarlets later this month.

Sporting Memories, a charity which operates free community-based clubs all across Great Britain that welcome older people that have a passion for sport and want to make friends and connections in their local community, has joined with Scarlets Rugby to launch a group in Llanelli.

The club uses the power of remembering and talking about sport alongside physical activity to support older people aged over 50 to live better lives, including those living with dementia, depression, or living in isolation and lonely circumstances.

It’s a great opportunity for local people from all backgrounds to not only share their stories but to also partake in a weekly session that ignite old memories through photographs and quizzes as well as getting active again with a range of fun games and inclusive exercises. And if that isn’t enough, there’s also the opportunity to have a cup of tea or coffee (normally with some biscuits included as well) at half-time.

The Llanelli club launches on Wednesday, May 31 with a weekly session running between 11am and 1pm at the Parc y Scarlets cafe.

Chris Wilkins, CEO of Sporting Memories, is encouraging those who are looking to try something new in Llanelli to visit the new clubs: “Sporting Memories clubs provide a fun set of social and physical activities that allow older sports fans, including those who are more physically or cognitively frail,  and all those connected with them, from family members and carers, to have a great time whilst creating relationships and companionship with people with similar interests in their local community.

“We’d really encourage people from the local community to get involved with the club, either as members or volunteers, as they provide a unique opportunity for people to get together and to bond over great sporting moments of the past or present and to take part in some fun, fully inclusive games.”
