Steff Evans to reach century of appearances as Scarlets take on Toyota Cheetahs

Rob Lloyd News

Steff Evans will make his 100th appearance for the Scarlets after being named in the side to face Toyota Cheetahs at Parc y Scarlets on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

The Wales international wing missed last weekend’s defeat to Edinburgh because of illness, but is back in a starting XV showing five changes from the 46-7 defeat.

The 25-year-old, another player who has come through the Scarlets Academy, made his debut against Zebre five years ago and has become one of the most dangerous attacking runners in the Guinness PRO14, crossing for 40 tries in 99 appearances.

“A hundred games is a very special moment, for him, for his club, our club and his family and his friends,” said Scarlets head coach Brad Mooar.

“Steff has been outstanding this season and that is there for all to see; you can see a real spark, a spring in his step and smile on his face. But what people don’t see is the work and input that he has behind the scenes in team meetings and with other players and how he is continuing to grow himself and helping to grow others. It has been a real pleasure to work with him.”

Evans replaces Tom James out wide and links up with Johnny McNicholl and Ryan Conbeer in the back three.

Kieron Fonotia, who impressed off the bench at Murrayfield, starts alongside captain Steff Hughes in midfield, while up front there are recalls for hooker Marc Jones and lock Steve Cummins and a first appearance of the season for back-rower Ed Kennedy.

On the bench, Dane Blacker comes in to provide scrum-half cover, while Corey Baldwin has recovered from a hip injury to take his place among the replacements.
