Injury update: Sione Kalamafoni and Johnny McNicholl

Scarlets have issued an injury update ahead of Saturday’s Judgement Day clash with the Dragons at the Principality Stadium.

Wales international Johnny McNicholl has returned to training and is back in contention for selection.

However, No. 8 Sione Kalamafoni has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign after limping off with an Achilles injury in the second half of the Challenge Cup quarter-final win over ASM Clermont Auvergne.

“It is disappointing for us to lose Sione because he is a player who has given us so much,” said Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel.

“It is disappointing for him as well because for him to play at the end of the season would have been great. He has been brilliant for us. In terms of overseas signings he is one of the best.

“He is the guy who has always offered himself to carry the ball and stand up in defence. He is a likeable guy as well and a good person to have in the environment.

“He is quiet off the field and then on the pitch he is vocal, led well and captained the side a few times. It’s a big blow but the players are willing to step up and it’s an opportunity for somebody to fill those big shoes.”

On McNicholl, who picked up a knee injury against Munster in Cork last month, Peel added: “Johnny’s back in training. In terms of form he has been outstanding for us, but as much as he is the player he is, we have a young backline and he really steps up in terms of leadership of that back line.”
