“Good to be back” were the words of centre Johnny Williams after his impressive return from injury in Scarlets’ 49-42 defeat to Munster in Cork.

Williams replaced the injured Johnny McNicholl midway through the first half and put in an eye-catching display packed with powerful defence, strong carries, line breaks and try assists.

It was the first appearance for the 26-year-old since the URC round three clash with Benetton and Williams looked like he was determined to make up for lost time.

“On a personal note it was really good to be back. It has been a long, hard five months with my calf,” he said after the match.

“My lungs were burning and the intensity and physicality was a big shock. I had longer (on the field) than I thought I would but I’m happy that I came out the other side okay.”

Reflecting on the loss, which saw Scarlets produce a stunning second-half rearguard after trailing 35-7 at the break, Williams added:  “We had a slow start which ended up costing us. it was a really intense, physical game and perhaps what could have been – unfortunately not, so there’s plenty to work on

“The spirit in the camp is really good. We’ve had a good run of games and form and confidence has been high. We came to Cork wanting a scalp. We knew it was going to be a tough game, a big challenge for us and it was one that got away.”

The URC takes another break for a couple of weeks, but the Scarlets are in action on Friday night with a friendly against English Premiership leaders Saracens at the StoneX Stadium (7.30pm kick-off). Tickets can be purchased HERE
