Props Kemsley Mathias and Sam Wainwright are the latest players to sign new contracts to commit to the Scarlets.

Both Wales U20s internationals, the pair have been mainstays in the Scarlets’ resurgence during the second half of this season.

From Haverfordwest, 23-year-old Mathias has had a breakthrough campaign, enjoying a run of games in the No. 1 jersey since the turn of the year. The loose-head, who was part of the Wales U20s side that beat New Zealand in 2019, has made 29 appearances in a Scarlets jersey since his debut three years ago.

“Kemsley has been outstanding for us this season, a young prop who has gone up against international front-rows week after week and more than held his own,” said Scarlets Head Coach Dwayne Peel.

“He is a player who works hard on his game and is always ready to learn. We are all excited by the potential he has.”

After arriving from Saracens in December, Wainwright has made a big impact in West Wales, playing 11 matches since his debut against the Dragons on New Year’s Day.

Hailing from Prestatyn in North Wales, Wainwright came through the ranks at Rhyl RFC before playing for RGC 1404 and then being picked up by Sarries. The 24-year-old tight-head received a shock call-up to Wales’ touring squad in South Africa last summer, where he made his Test debut in the historic win over the Springboks in Bloemfontein and added to his cap tally during the 2022 Autumn Nations Series.

Peel added: “Sam has made a big impression since arriving mid-season. He already has a taste of international rugby and is determined to keep working on his game and keep getting better.

“The front-rowers don’t often get the praise they deserve, but the likes of Sam and Kemsley have been crucial parts of our success in the second half of the season.

:”The fact that two talented young Welsh props have committed to the Scarlets is fantastic news as we look to build over the coming seasons.”

Fellow front-rower Ryan Elias and centres Joe Roberts, Ioan Nicholas and Eddie James have also agreed new deals, while the Scarlets announced this week that Wales international Ioan Lloyd is heading to West Wales from Bristol Bears in the summer.

A huge thanks to Pembrokeshire College for their player sponsorship of Kemsley.
