“It takes a champion side to beat another champions side,” Owens

Despite a later comeback and three second half tries the Scarlets were runners-up at the Guinness PRO14 final with Leinster lifting the trophy and doing the double after lifting the European Champions Cup a few weeks ago.

Having allowed Leinster to storm ahead with a 40-18 scoreline the Scarlets showed fantastic character in the second half to come back within eight points of Leinster with a final winning score of 40-32.

Captain Ken Owens believes that his side showed great character this season to make it back to the final and have come a very long way in the last few years.

“From where we’ve come four years ago, with Scott Williams tracking back and turning a guy over in Treviso to win by the skin of our teeth to qualify for Europe, to getting to the top table of Europe and the league.

“People questioned whether last year was a fluke; I think we’ve shown it wasn’t. We’ve showed a lot of character to get back to the final. We’ve improved in Europe and got to the semi finals and I just think as long as we keep pushing ourselves to be playing in the last rounds of the season we’re going to keep getting better.”

Commenting on the side’s performance in the final Owens went on to say; “We didn’t get everything right today, Leinster are a very good side and small margins went their way. They capitalized on it.

“It takes a champion side to beat another champion side, I thought our boys put a massive effort in. We kept playing right until the end, sometimes you come up against a better side.”
