Work has been completed on the new state-of-the-art pitch at Parc y Scarlets.

The Scarlets have invested more than half a million pounds in a new hybrid playing surface ahead of the new Guinness PRO14 season.

During the last six weeks contractors have been working around the clock to remove the previous fibre-elastic rootzone, replace it with 2,500 tonnes of sand and soil mix and then using high-tech machinery to stitch artificial fibres with traditional grass.

The result is a stunning sea of green which will be ready for the start of the new season.

“We are delighted with the finished product,” said head groundsman Luke Jenkins.

“The stitching will mean the pitch is much more stable all year round, it will be a much faster playing surface and even in wet conditions, the quality of surface under foot will be so much better.

“The best stadiums in the world, the likes of the Principality Stadium, Wembley, all have this stitched system and along with the 3G surround we are now up there with the best surfaces in the world.”

The opening match on the new surface will be the Scarlets’ A clash with Ospreys in the Celtic Cup on Saturday, September 7.
