Alex Craig and Ioan Nicholas picked up the main awards at the Scarlets’ end of season awards dinner at Parc y Scarlets.

Second row Craig, a summer arrival from Gloucester, was voted Oil4Wales Players’ Player of the Season following an outstanding first campaign in Llanelli.

Craig is one of the leading tacklers in the URC going into the final round of the regular season next weekend.

Pontyberem product Nicholas got the nod as Dyfed Steels Supporters’ Player of the Season after a campaign that saw him shine at full-back, wing and centre. He also played more games, 23, than any player in the squad.

Nicholas was the clear winner, polling 46% of the fans’ vote to see off the challenge of the other nominees Alex Craig, Ioan Lloyd, Gareth Davies, Johnny Williams and Ryan Elias.

The Coaches’ Breakthrough Player, sponsored by Owens, was won by centre Eddie James. The 21-year-old from Carmarthen has produced a series of powerful carrying performances at the heart of the Scarlets midfield and is knocking on the door for a place in the Wales squad to tour Australia this summer.

James also had a hand in the Purus HST Try of the Season – another award voted for by the fans – with his pass putting Joe Roberts through a gap for a superb individual score against Munster.

There were also special presentations to a number of the departing players, including double centurions Ken Owens and Jonathan Davies, as well as Scott Williams, Dan Jones, Wyn Jones and Kieran Hardy, who all made more than a century of appearances for the club.

The black tie event was held in the Quinnell Lounge at Parc y Scarlets with 150 guests in attendance. It ended with presentations to long-serving staff members Ann de Filippo, Wayne James and Garan Evans, who have all been at the club more than 25 years.
