Our Sporting Memories group took a trip back to one of the greatest moments in Scarlets’ history this week.
Roy Bergiers, the scorer of the match-winning try against the mighty All Blacks in 1972, was the special guest at the club, where he regaled our members with memories of that try and that incredible day as well as his journey from Carmarthen schoolboy to British & Irish Lion.
Roy even brought in the actual match-ball from the New Zealand game, as well as a jersey worn by his opposite number on the day, Bruce Robertson.
Born in Carmarthen, Roy played 247 games for the Scarlets over 11 seasons, scoring 80 tries.
Capped 11 times by Wales in the centre, he also toured with the Lions to South Africa as part of the ‘Invincibles’ squad of 1974.
Scarlets Sporting Memories coordinator Rob Lloyd: “It was fantastic to have Roy with us, recounting his schoolboy days in Carmarthen growing up, his athletics background and rugby journey with Llanelli, Wales and the Lions.
“His memories of that day in October 1972 are as vivid as ever and our members loved hearing his own experience of that afternoon and night, and of course, that try.
“Our Sporting Memories club continues to grow in numbers every week and it is brilliant to be able to welcome such well-known and much-loved personalities from our community who give up their time for events like this.”
The Scarlets Sporting Memories Group meets every Wednesday at the Parc y Scarlets cafe at 11am.
