Thousands get involved in a busy term for our Community team!

Rob LloydCommunity News, News

The Scarlets Community team has enjoyed a busy opening couple of months to the season, engaging with more than 6,500 people in communities across west Wales.

From the ever-popular club visits with our Scarlets senior and academy players, primary school festivals, inclusion days, coach development sessions to our matchday events, the team have been strengthening connections with local schools, rugby clubs, community organisations and partners, while inspiring the next generation of rugby players.

Club visits, school festivals and nutrition

Rain or shine, our community team and Scarlets players have been out and about across the region visiting 36 grassroots rugby clubs and four community rugby hubs. You can see some brilliant photos and videos of the visits across our social media channels.

There has also been a programme of primary school rugby festivals, 10 in all in partnership with the WRU Community team, giving children the opportunity to experience rugby in a fun, inclusive and supportive environment.

Beyond rugby, the team continues to play an important role in promoting healthy lifestyles. In collaboration with Castell Howell through the ‘Growing Healthy Futures’ initiative and Carmarthenshire Actif through ‘Eat Grow Thrive’, the team has been delivering nutritional education and healthy living programmes to local primary schools.

Inclusion and disability rugby

Inclusion remains a key priority for the Foundation, making sure that rugby and physical activity are accessible to people with additional learning needs and a wide range of abilities.

There are weekly sessions through the Inclusive Community Clubs at Parc y Scarlets and Canolfan yr Enfys in Ammanford, which provide opportunities to develop physical skills, build confidence, socialise and enjoy the benefits of taking part in sport in a supportive environment.

The team has also taken part in wider inclusion initiatives, delivering activities at the WRU Inclusion Day at Cardiff Arms Park and has helped the Pembrokeshire Vikings mixed ability team during their training sessions.

Coach development

Recognising the important role coaches play in developing young players, there has been a programme of coach development events in partnership with the WRU Community team.

Sessions have taken place at Aberystwyth RFC, Newcastle Emlyn RFC, Haverfordwest RFC and Pontyberem RFC, with Scarlets coaches Dwayne Peel and Steff Hughes among those passing on their experience and expertise.

Partnerships

Community staff, together with Scarlets Carwyn Leggatt-Jones, Sam Williams and Jac Price, visited West Wales General Hospital in Glangwili to help promote Play in Hospital and Healthcare Week 2026, in conjunction with Hywel Dda University Health Board.

We attended the Pentre Awel Wellness Day as part of the centre’s first birthday celebrations,  supporting wider efforts to promote health, wellbeing and active lifestyles within the community.

The Scarlets also hosted an event at Parc y Scarlets for refugees in collaboration with EYST, which supports ethnic minority people across Wales.

Matchdays

The opening four home fixtures have provided a fantastic platform for community engagement, with the Scarlets continuing to welcome grassroots players and schoolchildren to the Parc.

There was a primary school festival in collaboration with Intro Teach before our pre-season match against Saracens; the team delivered a festival for mini rugby sides ahead of the Cardiff game and we had mini and junior teams playing at half-time for the Benetton and Newcastle Red Bulls fixtures. Members of the Llanelli Schoolboys squad were also on flag-bearing duty for the Challenge Cup opener.

And there’s no let-up for the team, who are looking forward to October half-term when its Fit, Fed, Fun Camps and Scarlets Rugby Camps will be running.
