Brython Thunder clinched an impressive third win of the campaign, beating Glasgow Warriors 34-22 in Round 10 of the Celtic Challenge at Parc y Scarlets on Sunday afternoon.
The young Welsh side crossed for six tries with wing Eleanor Hing, centre Hannah Bluck, full-back Hannah Lane, who grabbed a brace of tries, centre Gabby Healan and lock Catrin Jones all getting on the scoresheet.
This was the second of back-to-back league games against the Scottish side and the final game of this campaign and the Welsh side were well worth the win.
The victory made it three wins in this league campaign for Thunder and saw them finish fourth in the Celtic Challenge table. The Irish side, Wolfhounds, had already been crowned Celtic Challenge champions for a second successive season with their win over Edinburgh on Saturday.
The home side opened the scoring with a well-worked try after an opening period of pressure when Hing crossed in the corner. There was a break in play with prop Cadi-Lois Davies was stretchered off with a leg injury, but Brython settled the quickest with Wales centre Bluck crashing over from short-range from a lineout.
Fly-half Emma Marshall landed a magnificent touchline conversion to make it 12-0 after 10 minutes to the Thunder.
Glasgow replied with their first try with their first real period of pressure by centre Nicole Flynn. Fellow centre Briar McNamara added the extras to make it 12-7.
Wing Ellie Tomans then nearly created one of the solo tries of the season, including two chip-kicks, but full-back Hannah Lane did cross in the corner for her second try of the season.
Centre Gabby Healan then took advantage of Thunder’s expansive approach and ran in for a 60m solo try to score under the posts. Marshall added the conversion to make it 24-7.
Glasgow crossed for their second try by wing Emily Norval in the corner to claw the Scots back into the contest before prop Poppy Fletcher crossed for a third try to make it 24-17 at half-time.
After the break, lock Catrin Jones crashed over for the Welsh side’s fifth try to extend the home side’s lead.
Glasgow replied almost straight away with a try by Orla Proctor to make it a seven-point game midway through the second half.
But it was Lane that sealed the win after a superb counter-attack in the dying moments to clinch an impressive victory for Brython.
