With just one round of the regular BKT United Rugby Championship campaign remaining, it’s time to vote for your Dyfed Steels Supporters’ Player of the Season.
The URC play-off battle reaches a crescendo for the Scarlets this Saturday in Durban when Dwayne Peel’s side can secure a top-eight play-off spot as well as a place in next season’s Investec Champions Cup.
An impressive 2024-25 has seen a number of contenders in line for the player-of-the-season accolade, so, after consultation with our coaching team, here are the five nominees …
Blair Murray
It’s been a dream first season in West Wales for the 23-year-old speedster, who was one of Wales’s standout players in the Six Nations. Has crossed for 10 tries in Scarlets colours and is making a fast finish to be the top try-scorer in the URC this season.
Marnus van der Merwe
The combative hooker has become an instant fans favourite since his arrival from South African side the Toyota Cheetahs. A powerful carrier who hits hard in defence, Marnus is second in the URC’s list for turnovers and top for line-out throws won.
Sam Lousi
The Scarlets’ Mr Consistent, who won this award in 2022. He has also been players’ player of the season on two occasions. Sam has played in 20 of the Scarlets’ 22 matches this term starting in 18 of them. A towering presence at the set-piece and around the breakdown, his off-loading game is up there with the best. Is also the third highest tackler in the URC and joint third for turnovers won.
Gareth Davies
The Wales international’s Peter Pan impression this season has been incredible, playing more minutes than any other Scarlets player at the age of 34. Gareth’s kicking game has been a key weapon in the Scarlets’ gameplan, while his five tries in the URC has seen him become the leading all-time Welsh try-scorer in the competition.
Josh Macleod
The skipper has led from the front this season, highlighting how much he was sorely missed during an injury-hit 2023-24. Sitting in the top 10 for turnovers in the URC, Josh is also the fifth highest tackler in the competition and has helped himself to nine tries this term, second only to Blair in the Scarlets’ try charts.
